Kansas is known as the original Free
State, it was the state that was founded to express the object
of equality. Later Kansas was then known as the birthplace of
the Brown v. Board of Education decision. Kansas is a place for
adventure along with many new and exciting vacation experiences.
Kansas is a place full of history, museums, farming, Native
American legacies, and much more. Kansas is the state with the
largest remaining portions of tallgrass prairie in North
America. The tallgrass is what gives visitors a chance to see
what the continent looked like 200 years ago. Kansas also
celebrates their pioneer, aviation, farming, and many other
legacies. People from Kansas are called Kansans and the state
was originally named after the Kansas River which flows right
through the state.
Originally Kansas was an area that was a
home for many nomadic Native Americans who would hunt bison. The
state was first settled by European Americans during the 1830's.
Francisco Vasquez de Coronado was the very first settler to step
foot on Kansas land in present day. He first explored the land
in Kansas during 1541 and finally in 1803 most of Kansas was
secured by the United States with the Louisiana Purchase.
Between 1812 and 1821 most of Kansas was actually a part of the
Missouri territory. The capital city in Kansas is Topeka and the
state in general is known as the Heart of America's West. The
exact date of Kansas' admission into statehood is January 29,
1861 and was the 34th state in the Constitution.
Kansas' flag is a navy blue field with a
sunflower on it which is the state flower. There is also a state
seal with the word "KANSAS" at the bottom. Inside of the state
seal there are thirty four stars that represent their statehood
and on the top of the stars is the motto "To the Stars Through
Difficulties". There is also a sunrise shadow above a farmer
plowing a field next to his cabin, a steamboat sailing in the
Kansas River, a wagon train and Native Americans hunting bison
all in the state seal as well. This flag was adopted by the
state of Kansas in 1927. Kansas has many things to offer for
visitors and has a lot of interesting history behind it that
visitors do not want to miss.
